The definitive volume of everything Shigeo Gocho (1946-1983) published in his lifetime, the plates volume of a two-volume complete edition, with a documents volume planned for November 2023. It reproduces every picture of the four books he saw into print: Days (1971, shared with a classmate from Kuwasawa Design School), SELF AND OTHERS (1977, sixty photographs, each with a person in it, himself included in the self-portraits), the ink-blot book Spiritual Travels (1980, fourteen symmetrical blots made from January 1972) and Familiar Street Scenes (1981, 47 colour pictures on Kodachrome), together with the marbling series Memories of Water and the six pictures of Childhood published in Nihon Camera in June 1983. Arranged by year of making, photographs and non-photographic works appear as a pair of outer and inner. Vintage prints and original film that he left guided the printing, with a different paper for each series, and the volume closes with an essay by Yukiko Tomiyama, a chronology and a list of works.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
