The long-awaited new work by Risaku Suzuki, made mainly of unpublished pictures from his lifework series White, Sakura and Water Mirror. It opens with an image of the sea at Kumano, a landscape special to him, drifts through pale winter light, drift ice, wave crests and the white of snowfields, passes through a sequence of cherry blossoms that announces spring, and closes with a series of green water mirrors that bring the signs of spring alive in every corner of the picture. With photographs laid out using generous margins, the viewer senses the shift of light and colour as the eye moves from picture to picture, and notices that in the unbroken flow of time from winter to spring, on the surface of the world a lens can record, extremely complex changes arise everywhere. For Suzuki photography is a response to the world he encounters, with the pictures set in sequence so that a space opens between them, and the space between the pages is entrusted to the viewer, in whom what is remembered and what is seen now overlap.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
