A culmination of Nao Nakai's work on snow and time, made over seven years in Tsunan, Niigata, in the Oku-Shinetsu heavy snow region, where since 2015 she has spent 100 days every winter and in 2020-21 stayed for about a year. Three metres of snow melt and soften by day and freeze by night like great waves engulfing the town; snow clouds take the light from the sky and the snow on the ground absorbs all sound, while time stands still indoors until the roar of snow sliding off a roof breaks the silence. In mid-April a dripping begins inside the snowpack, hollows open to the outside, and time emerges with colours, sounds and smells, plants and animals overlapping into one life. Strata proving that snow began to fall 8,000 years ago, earthenware, forests twisted by snow, the traces of villages and rice fields and the pale ink-black eyes of people born in the reflected light of humid snow describe a land where everything carves its own time.
