Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Mark van den Brink (the Netherlands), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book emerges from a large archive of small subminiature negatives, 8 x 11 mm in size, made with the Minox spy camera, the smallest format in analogue photography. Rather than constructing a narrative, it gathers fragments, fleeting gestures and quiet observations. The images accumulate without hierarchy, forming a field of moments that echo the instability of memory. As in life, the sequence remains unpredictable, at times frustrating, yet persistently engaging. The cover is plain white with a single line of small black type. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
