The questions Lieko Shiga has asked herself and pursued, set out in her own words: what is the medium of photography, and what are life and expression lived together with the land? Between June 2011 and March 2012 she gave ten talks, the Lieko Shiga Lectures, in the run-up to her exhibition Rasen Kaigan, and this volume gathers their words together with many illustrations and installation views. The lectures run from an introduction that goes to Kitakama through topics such as being an alien, the song of flesh and blood, photography as resistance, the contact of invisible realms with incomprehension, an intensely bright place and distant gazes, to a spirit of the pine forest, with guests Mariko Takeuchi and Yoshiaki Kai. The text is entirely in Japanese and the book is a companion to the album of the same exhibition.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
