Umi (Sea) is a collaboration between the photographer Shin Suzuki and the actor Kengo Kora. It is not uncommon for Japanese movie stars to be the subject of a photobook, but this is far from a typical production: the cover reads Shin Suzuki, Umi, Kengo Kora, and the pictures were made over one long night with a crew of just two. The sea is the third collaborator, since Kora is mostly seen in the water, sometimes visibly cold. The book starts with black-and-white photographs taken in the middle of the night, as Kora appears to rage against the water; as the sun comes up Suzuki switches to colour, bringing out the muted colours and slight warmth of an early morning by the sea, as if using Kora as a medium to explore changes of light and temperature. The oversize dimensions, saddle stitching and full-bleed printing heighten the sensory experience.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
