A collection of photographs documenting the drag queen scene in and around Osaka. Hata takes the viewer through the full drag queen experience, from preparation to performance to private and party time, though the focus is on performance and he photographed a wide range of drag queens on stage. Drag queen culture is an underground phenomenon in Japan, and even Osaka is not San Francisco, but the book is a colourful look at this scene which highlights the pride of its members.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
