Text by Juvenal Barría

Carolina Agüero carried out an internal, memory-based process that allowed her to explore her ancestors, her origins or lineage within the Kawésqar people. This marked the beginning of her journey to the south of Chile, where she sought to reconstruct this memory. Part of the questioning or value judgments in projects involving genealogies centres on genetic capacity, coherence, and the relationship between the author and the subject of study. Her search does not focus on classification, seen as a classical Western practice that speaks of human superiority. Her vision presents a common space in which nature, the author and the image connect horizontally, asking what lies beyond and connecting with the universal spirit. The path she takes breaks away from these articulations and structures, grounding her research in largely embodied processes and in experiences lived in earlier stages of her search for territory, approaching it from solitude through a real and unmediated connection, which results in a shift in perception, meaning and belonging, drawing her closer not to a specific culture but to a territory and a landscape. Key moments include the experience in Nahuelbuta, an encounter with an anthropomorphic tree, with nature and with visions, and the experience on Laitec Island, an encounter with a cave and with memory.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
