Even after repeated viewings it remains hard to believe that the otherworldly landscapes of Katsuhito Nakazato's photobook were all photographed on earth, on beaches and coasts all over Japan. As in earlier series, Nakazato has an unrivalled intuition for views and situations that look absolutely otherworldly and alien, photographs that offer entirely new perspectives. The framework of the series is the old Japanese folktale of Urashima Taro, a kind boy who does a good deed and is transported so far forward in time that the world becomes entirely unknown to him; the magic of the photographs lies in the fact that these alien-seeming spaces still possess beauty, romance and an inviting kindness. In the afterword Nakazato writes of travelling along the boundary between land and sea, continuing to communicate with the landscape that lies in the vacant spaces of daily life, the landscape that compels him to seclude himself from the world.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
