The book takes its cue from the diary of Nagai Kafu, a writer who took pleasure all his life in purposeless strolls. Within a sincere approach to life, Masahito Agake at times wishes to revel in purposelessness, and that may be what takes shape in the photographs. At some point in life everyone stops to wonder, perhaps with a sense of loss, what they are doing, what they are living for and what the meaning of the world is; the image of someone walking on aimlessly is something like a slug. The text by Akira Hasegawa, Ask the Slug, calls it a remarkably singular photobook by a self-reliant and independent photographer. Namekuji is the Japanese word for slug.
