British photographer Dennis Morris began taking photographs at the age of nine and was recognised by Bob Marley at thirteen. Since then he has been known for his iconic portraits of famous artists such as the Sex Pistols and Patti Smith.

This book mainly features pictures taken in his early teens, at the beginning of a career of more than fifty years: everyday scenes of the black community of London where he grew up, portraits made in a pop-up studio he built himself from one white sheet and one borrowed tungsten floodlight, and pictures of sound system culture and the Black Power movement. The community's poverty, difficulties, strength, pride, style and cool are shown as they were. The black-and-white photographs are also newly coloured, reflecting Morris's message 'Don't let the colour confuse you'. The book is a chronicle of African-British people in the 1960s and 1970s.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
