Der Sturm stages the theatrical and enigmatic tale of an avant-garde painter in 1920s Berlin, caught in a love triangle with two women. For the first time in his career, Paolo Ventura creates an entire story completely in black and white, evoking the atmosphere of vintage cinema from the Weimar Republic. The works come to life through the artist's unique method: meticulously crafted miniature sets and handmade marionettes, which are photographed and then enhanced with touches of paint. A unique microcosm where photographic fiction meets the materiality of sculpture and drawing.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
