For his most recent cycle of works, photographer-artist Thomas Ruff digitally manipulated glass negatives from the 1930s which he had found in the photo archive of a machine and tool factory. This elegantly bound publication presents his machine pictures for the first time in book form. Ruff combed through the photo archive of a machine- and tool factory in 2003. From this portfolio of some three thousand glass negatives from the 1930s, originally made for use in a sales catalogue, the artist took a small selection and subjected them to digital manipulation. Using a computer, he colorized these product photographs in the iron-oxide colors of old industrial plants and enlarged them. In the approximately sixty photographs produced thus far, Thomas Ruff combines analogue and digital photography to delve into the question of the authenticity of a photographic reproduction and the constellations formed by reality, perception, and representation.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
