Streets, squares and buildings give shape to public life. But what are streets, squares and buildings on or in which no public life takes place? Desolate places, bleak areas, inhospitable terrain. Innere Angelegenheiten tells how people have furnished the surroundings in which they are supposed to live and feel. The pictures tell of the people who cannot be seen in them, of the life that does not take place in them, of expectations and longings buried in properly laid-out wastelands. Dirk Reinartz took the photographs between 1989 and 2002 throughout Germany, yet they appear entirely timeless. It is a colour series continuing his black-and-white project Kein schöner Land: a quiet book full of surprising details and small stories about an orderly republic.
