Our Own Roof is a collection of images from two separate yet intertwining projects: Contact and Trials, made over the course of 7 years from 2016 to 2023. A mother's auto-immune disease in 2016 began de Varona's obsession to re-invite death back into their home. Moving to New Mexico, his obsession with death morphed into an obsession for life. His chosen family — including Aaron 'Pillar' Martin Garcia, an unsheltered Kewa Pueblo man later found murdered — indirectly helped him let his mother go. The outcome was a visual record of testimonies: each image representing a standalone saga in that individual's life. Winner FOLIO, PhMuseum masterclass 2024.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
