Shot on the coast of England at Dungeness, Samsara is shaped by Shiraishi's memories of childhood visits to his grandparents' home in the Japanese countryside, and by the realisation that came from his time there: that the natural and the man-made are both part of the landscape. In Dungeness there is balance: life and death, yin and yang, black and white. The design of the book repeats this duality. Images shimmer, black pages balance white, adder stones puncture the paper, and full-bleed images are occasionally interrupted by pages of differently textured paper. Collapsing time and space, Samsara brings the reader closer to the emotions and landscape of Dungeness, a cobblestone headland stranded at the edge of England.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
