Peter Granser's photographic series presents a selection of buildings in El Alto, Bolivia, by the Bolivian architect Freddy Mamani Silvestre, whose style he calls new Andean architecture. The colours and shapes are inspired by the indigenous Aymara culture and by the pre-Inca architecture of Tiwanaku near Lake Titicaca. As Winston Hampel writes in the accompanying essay, Granser concentrates entirely on the buildings and people appear nowhere; through tight framing each house is detached from context, time and place, and what is left is pattern and composition. Mamani, a self-taught architect, has realised more than sixty projects in El Alto since 2005.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
