Max Kersting collects seemingly trivial photographs and creates new pictures by painting over them; in Planet der Anfänger the material comes from his own life. A gang from Lippstadt in Germany is captured in shaky pictures that look like colourful shadows gone wild, and the interplay with Kersting's short texts condenses a feeling that, from outside, looks like brutally barren boredom but is at its core the nucleus of all later life: stumbling into real life as an entangled, self-involved, smooching pseudo-skater with the firm intention of somehow getting it right. Kersting, born in 1983 in Lippstadt, studied design in Düsseldorf and is known for his painting on old photographs.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
