Each copy is a slice of random pages cut from a stack and wrapped in a poster with an essay by John Beeson

Bien commun is French for common good, and refers in philosophy, economics and political science to what is shared or achieved by all or most members of a community. Julien Viala collaborated with John Beeson and Edition Taube, using the term as a starting point. In an almost unlimited photographic essay he explores how art, cultural artefacts and aesthetics occur in public and semi-public spaces. Together with Jonas Beuchert of Edition Taube he developed a concept to print the pictures on paper, mix them and glue them randomly into long, stack-like objects, so that every copy is a different slice. John Beeson's essay of the same name tries to work out what the term means.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
