An archive booklet on transparent paper showing the research of Saskia Groneberg for her book Vesuv, Venus. Vulcan and Venus, the ugliest god and the most beautiful of the goddesses, were not only a couple in ancient mythology; here they meet in the form of the Venus Medici and Vesuvius. Historical photographs, engravings and sculptures are superimposed on loose sheets of transparent paper, so that the projection surfaces for beauty and elemental force, man and woman, are quoted, staged and deconstructed, and the superimpositions create new visual moments and cross-references.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
