New edition of the 1938 book

The reprint of Robert Capa's famed monograph on the Spanish Civil War, first published in 1938. With images by Capa and Gerda Taro, it was a poignant tribute to the men and women, civilians and soldiers, fighting in Spain against Franco's fascist insurrection, covering the spectrum of emotions of a civil war in only one year of images. Forgotten after the Second World War, it is newly appreciated for its call to arms. The new edition replicates the original layout by André Kertész, Capa's original captions and Jay Allen's preface, improves the image quality, and adds an essay on the making and reception of the book and a checklist identifying author, location and date of each image, revealing among other things unattributed photographs by Chim, later David Seymour.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
