Colour photographs made over four winters along a short stretch of the River Exe floodplain
Includes a text by Jem Southam

For four consecutive winters the English photographer Jem Southam repeatedly visited a short stretch of riverbank along the floodplain of the River Exe in Devon. He stood and watched as dusk faded into darkness or as the light of dawn gathered, witnessing the different passage of each winter. In the evenings, long past sunset, swans, geese and ducks arrived on the river to spend the night in safety; in the mornings the birds woke, preened, fed and socialised as they prepared for the new day. These periods of subtle drama have played out continuously for millennia, as the world spins and each new day dawns the spectacle repeats itself; yet it is endlessly varied. In the photographs Southam notates and narrates the subtle shifts and dramas of the theatrical space around him. The project began on a December night when Southam was woken by a phone call about his brother's hospitalisation and, after sitting with him through the early hours, went for a walk by the river and found himself absorbed in the dusk; the work became a long, accompanied vigil over four winter seasons, and a fifth as the book was being prepared.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
