In 1953 the United States and Spain signed a mutual defense agreement and built an aero-naval base in the town of Rota, Cádiz. Of the town's eight thousand acres some twenty-four hundred belong to the base, drawing a constant fence through the landscape — a physical barrier through whose gaps North American customs and traditions seep into the small community. Lagata's family moved to Rota in the 1970s and he grew up amid these influences; from 2011 he portrays the people, places and signals that shape his reality, working through questions of identity, roots and memory.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
