A history of Cherry Lane Theatre, New York's longest continually running off-Broadway theater, founded in 1923 by a community of experimental artists in a former brewery at 38 Commerce Street, on a tree-lined street in Greenwich Village. The book follows a century of ambitious productions staged more than forty blocks south of Broadway and the hundreds of writers, directors and actors who got their start on its stage, including Kevin Bacon, Amiri Baraka, Tony Curtis, Katori Hall, Adrienne Kennedy, David Mamet, Sam Shepard, Jerry Stiller, Barbra Streisand and Bridgette Wimberly, and resident companies such as the Savoy Opera Company, the Living Theatre and Edward Albee's Albarwild. Published for the theater's centenary; A24 acquired Cherry Lane Theatre in 2023 and reopened it in 2025 as a venue for film screenings, theater and comedy. Distributed through MACK.
