Book 013 in the A24 Screenplay Collection, dedicated to Past Lives (2023), the debut feature written and directed by Celine Song. The film follows Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends separated when Nora's family emigrates from South Korea, who reunite two decades later in New York; it was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, making Song the first Asian woman nominated in the latter category. The book includes the full screenplay, an introduction by playwright Lynn Nottage, essays by Sloane Crosley and Doreen St. Félix, and a conversation between Song and philosopher Andrew H. Miller. Song is a Korean-Canadian playwright and filmmaker based in New York; her second feature, Materialists, was released by A24 in 2025. Published by A24, distributed through MACK.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
