A24 Screenplay Collection 001

Book 001 in the A24 Screenplay Collection, dedicated to Ex Machina (2015), the directorial debut of Alex Garland, starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander — a science-fiction chamber piece about a programmer invited to administer the Turing test to an intelligent humanoid robot, winner of the 2016 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and nominated for Best Original Screenplay. The book presents Garland's script with essays by queer theorist Jack Halberstam and AI researcher Murray Shanahan, concept art of the robot Ava by Jock, the film's full credits and the '24 Frames' section of director-selected stills. The first book in the collection, launched in September 2019 in a first edition of 2000 copies, offset printed in Europe on Munken and Garda paper. Published by A24, distributed through MACK.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
