Introduction by Philippe Starck

Skirts, by artist Clare Strand, features monochrome photographs of tables dressed with pleated cloths as if they were skirts. Simple, witty and intriguing, each of the portraits shows an empty clothed table standing in front of a curtain. Playing with both social and photographic conventions, Strand hints at what may be concealed yet never revealed in these photographs. Consistently working in black and white, Strand employs photography, video and installation; using utilitarian imagery, her work connects with themes such as the paranormal, the magical and the humorous, while exploring how the photographic image can escape meaning and understanding. Her projects have explored photographic genres from Victorian portraiture to crime scene and forensic photography, primarily influenced by her collections of catalogues, scrapbooks and literary texts. With its introduction by the designer Philippe Starck, this slim, elegantly produced volume turns an everyday domestic object into a study of concealment, suggestion and the limits of the photographic image.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
