Photographs combined with survivor testimonies and an essay by the artist

In Silent Witness, photographs of private houses and public buildings in which war crimes—specifically the rapes of women of all ethnic groups living in Bosnia and Herzegovina—were committed during the Bosnian War are combined with testimonies from the women who survived. Cornelia Suhan's photographs of these buildings, the silent witnesses, allow the stories to be told without exposing those affected to the public again. 'I kept driving past buildings where the crimes had been committed during my stays in Bosnia. I noticed how some houses still stood abandoned after the war; to me they seemed like the untouchables, while in others all traces had been removed.' The book includes images of some of the buildings where the crimes took place—from schools and sports halls to hospitals and police headquarters, garages, apartment buildings, hotels and spas, mills, factories, canteens, bus stations, army headquarters, prisons, museums and mosques. The buildings are visible, but not what happened within. Suhan's documentation enables a factual presentation that conveys information and evidence, beginning to convey the enormity and scale of the crimes against women during this period, and serving as an occasion for remembrance and commemoration.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
