The Winners by Rafal Milach brings together portraits, landscapes and still lifes from a country where the state has institutionalised the celebration of personal achievement. In Belarus—Europe's last dictatorship under Alexander Lukashenko—citizens are honoured with state prizes and trophies for the most ordinary and extraordinary of activities, from school athletics and dairy production to model parenting. Milach travelled across the country meeting these laureates, photographing them in their homes alongside the medals, certificates, sashes and statuettes that signify their official recognition. The deadpan formality of the portraits, the rigid display of objects and the bleak, often Soviet-era interiors collectively reveal a society in which public reward functions as a tool of control, ideological cohesion and quiet coercion. Milach—co-founder of the Sputnik Photos collective and a Magnum nominee—uses the language of typology and document to expose the strange theatre of officially distributed merit in a one-party state, where the prize is both an honour and a sign of conformity.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
