Following the publication of Carlo Levi's Christ Stopped in Eboli (1945), Matera — the so-called "peasant capital" — became a point of pilgrimage for writers, photographers and intellectuals from across the world, drawn to a place that history appeared to have bypassed. Cinema was inevitably drawn there too. The Milanese director Alberto Lattuada and photographer Federico Patellani chose Matera as the setting for She-Wolf (1953), a film in which Neorealist sensibility meets melodrama. Patellani's photographic reportage — left unpublished for decades and here presented in its entirety for the first time — spans the search for locations and the on-set documentation of the shoot, offering an invaluable record of the faces and places of Matera more than sixty years ago, and a vivid testament to the distinctive artistic vision of its author.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
