The first volume on the Imperium Romanum work of Alfred Seiland (*1952, St. Michael, Austria) appeared for the first exhibitions in 2013/2014. Since 2006 Seiland has been working on this long-term project, visiting sites all over Europe, around the Mediterranean and even in the USA, always accompanied by his large-format camera. His destinations are ruin sites of the entire empire of antiquity, from Armenia to Portugal, from Iraq to Hadrian's Wall in England. Often his motifs show hard-to-access, even non-public places normally hidden from the tourist. Seiland's photographs confront the viewer with the conflict between antiquity and modernity; they are always perfect compositions of image and colour.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
