In June 1941, Enrico Peressutti was called up for military service and sent to the Russian front as an interpreter from Romania (then an Axis ally). He remained there until November 1942, then contracted typhus and was repatriated, thus managing to escape the terrible "Russian retreat." The Iuav Project Archive preserves the photos and drawings from that trip, spanning the period from August to November 1941. With the exception of a few images published in the 1942 Bompiani Almanac, the photographs are previously unpublished and represent an exceptional document of that historical moment, not only for their artistic value. His journey is above all a journey through time across Eastern Europe (Hungary, Romania, Ukraine), the journey to the front suspended in an often dramatic atmosphere, his gaze focused on the local populations, the Italian army, and daily life during wartime. The volume also includes a selection of domestic interior drawings, closer to his interests as an architect, with great attention to construction details.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
