Daniela Comani's photo series OFF is an excursus on perception in relation to media. With meticulous precision she examines the familiar device for reproducing moving images in its off-state: switched off, televisions seem dead, becoming cold objects but also projection surfaces for viewers. Even with the image extinguished, the dark screen reflects the room, the people and the objects in it. Comani does not simply photograph inactive televisions, she flashes them: the flash on the dark screen is like a big bang, creating something new while overexposing and erasing the reflection of the protagonist. This brief flare enters idiosyncratic connections with the surface structure of the devices, producing new images and forms: a landscape with a sunset in miniature format. The series is also an excursus on product styling: minimalistically she stages a collection of televisions of different shapes and sizes — with the brand names meticulously removed to bring out the object's distinctive character. The devices are photographed frontally, as if they were persons looking out at the viewer. Each picture is unique, despite the serial character of photography.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
