It's late afternoon in the summer of 1969. We're on the outskirts of Glasgow, and Gabriele Basilico is holding a Nikon F, shooting a single roll of film. He's in a state of grace, but no one can yet know that that roll marks Basilico's birth certificate as a photographer. He's struck by the Scottish kids, the terrains vagues, the 19th-century industrial archaeology. At the time, he was just an architecture student interested in postwar English new towns and Bill Brandt's social photography, but he hadn't yet manifested a vocation for photography. This volume, after Iran 1970 and Morocco 1971, completes the trilogy 'Basilico before Basilico' and is accompanied by texts by Umberto Fiori, Pippo Ciorra, and a testimony from Giovanna Calvenzi.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
