Gabriele Basilico travels through Morocco with Giovanna Calvenzi and a few friends. It's the summer of 1971, and one can sense the era's freedom of movement and the young photographer's tendency not to be guided by chance. After ten thousand kilometers of travel, fifteen rolls of film remain. The images oscillate between socially impactful reportage, the architectural profiles of imperial cities, and the faces that tell the story of people's lives. Morocco 1971 is a crucial stage in Gabriele Basilico's apprenticeship. The volume contains an essay by Michele Smargiassi who focuses on Basilico as a "great explorer of photographic genres," a short essay by Bernard Millet, and a testimony by Giovanna Calvenzi who reconstructs the atmosphere and goals of that adventure.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
