Genova Ventimiglia Genova Giorgio Andreotta Calò — In the summer of 2013, Giorgio Andreotta Calò led a group of artists on a journey on foot covering the two hundred kilometres from Genoa to Ventimiglia. For ten days the group moved along the Ligurian coast up to the French border, thus giving shape to a collective gesture of drawing closer to the physical and mental notion of the limit. “Walking is a poor, simple and forgotten gesture. In its paradoxical use, it creates a short circuit in the perception of reality, in that relationship between space and time which is turned on its head, or which simply returns to adopt a human proportion. There’s a start and a finishing point, and it is within this situation, this space-time segment, that an inner path is traced; a concept is shaped. Little by little, a sense of unity is established between the outside and the inside, between the slow modification of the landscape and that of one’s crossing of it.” (G.A.C.) From this experience, an artist’s book was created in four volumes, bringing together (although broken down by day and section) the succession of contributions of his walking companions, mirroring the forms of walking in a group. The drawings and travel notes taken by each artist on his/her own notepad are then put back together in a new collective narrative. Produced in three copies with the support of the AmiXi di Villa Croce, it is part of the collection of the Museum of Villa Croce.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
