Erik Steinbrecher photographs people lying and sleeping on the lawns of public parks in big cities. He approaches them to a very particular distance, furtively snatching their picture. What emerges are photographically highly ambivalent moods, states of suspension. On the one hand it is about depictions of overwhelming, highly vulnerable intimacy in public space, and the provocation of this publicly displayed intimacy. On the other hand, urban landscape pictures of great calm and reconciliation arise, in which the human body seems for once trusting toward “nature” and — at least transitorily — sheltered within it.
