A War Play is a project that explores how war is represented and staged through images. It originates from a stereoscopic work by painter Giuseppe Augusto Levis, part of a series depicting the First World War, in which local peasants from Piedmont were used to construct carefully arranged tableaux vivants.

Building on this historical material, the project reactivates and repositions it within a contemporary context, adding new layers of interpretation to its staged nature. The book follows this process from a theoretical and narrative standpoint, bringing together texts by curators ARTECO and CRIPTA747, alongside contributions from researchers Vittoria Martini and Kamil Dalkir.

Together, these reflections question how visual constructions shape perception, suggesting that images can guide, anticipate, or even distort the viewer’s understanding of historical truth.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
