Mao Ishikawa's seminal early work — photographs made between 1975 and 1977 in Koza and Kin, Okinawa, where she worked and lived among the women of bars frequented by Black American soldiers from the local US military bases. Across five chapters the book follows the women's courageous, honest lives — gossip, work, boyfriends, the beach, their children — a raw, "post-Provoke" personal documentary born of the photographer's own immersion. Reissued for the fiftieth anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
