The first monograph in English dedicated to a fundamental figure of Japanese art. Through subjects as diverse as old housing estates, human scars, kimono fabrics, personal objects belonging to missing people, and even her own water-damaged photographic prints, Ishiuchi Miyako makes the invisible visible, capturing time, atmosphere, and memory in photographic form. His work is both deeply personal and capable of evoking a wider world, suggested by the traces that emerge within the frame. Since the beginning of her career in the 1970s, Ishiuchi has established herself as one of Japan's most important photographers, paving the way for women in a traditionally male-dominated field. Ishiuchi Miyako: Traces retraces fifty years of his artistic practice, highlighting the themes that run through his entire production: the relationship with places, the passage of time, people's bodies and objects, always with particular attention to materiality and the ephemeral. Divided into three thematic sections — Town, Skin & Scars and Things Left Behind — the volume includes fundamental series such as Yokosuka Story, dedicated to the artist's hometown; 1 · 9 · 4 · 7, in which he photographs the hands and feet of fifty women born in the same year as him; and Frida, which catalogs the personal effects of the artist Frida Kahlo. Alongside the main photographic cycles, there are lesser-known works and hitherto unpublished materials. The photographs are accompanied by excerpts from Ishiuchi's writings, an in-depth interview by Lena Fritsch and finally an essay specially commissioned from the artist, texts which ensure that the author's voice accompanies the reader throughout the volume.
