«I returned to Japan to photograph something dear to me, without knowing exactly what. I was looking for calm in a megalopolis where it seems impossible to find it. I thought that if I could find it in Tokyo, maybe I would find it within myself too. It was then that I discovered the Kodo, a path that winds through forests and rocky terrain. I got lost there for several days, and this wandering proved to be a revelation. After seven days of walking, I returned to Tokyo covered in mud, but pervaded by a peace that a city of thirty million inhabitants cannot disturb. For the next month, I photographed relentlessly, with a newfound conviction and clarity. Each image became a scene, almost a theatrical work, fragile and intensely present at the same time. I picked up the camera again and again, with gratitude: once again, photography had opened a new path for me.»

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
