Romanistan is the diary of Luca Vitone's journey, retracing the path of Roma and Sinti from northwestern India to Italy, from Bologna to Chandigarh. Tracing a migration that occurred between the 8th and 14th centuries, the artist explores Romani culture. Vitone is interested in nomadism and the identity of ethnic minorities through an analysis of cultural productions—art, cartography, music, food—as elements of knowledge between people of different cultures. The narrative of migration becomes a tool for a broader reflection on the ideas of place and journey, community and tradition, and the perpetuation of social clichés and stigmas. The journey back to the origins of the Roma people is depicted from an 'outside' perspective that avoids the stereotypes with which Roma are commonly associated, seeking out the intellectual bourgeoisie through encounters with political figures, social activists, and academics. For Vitone, the Roma people represent a modern and transnational ideal of people, perhaps a possible example, also in light of current mass migrations.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
