September 16, 2022 Mahsa (Jina) Amini, 22, dies in a hospital in Tehran. Three days earlier she was arrested by the police because of an attitude that did not comply with the dress codes in force in the Islamic Republic of Iran - her hair was too visible or her pants were not in conformity - she received blows to the head while in police custody and fell into a coma. One death, one injustice too many which inflames the Iranian people. They take over public space, defy the most violent condemnations, film, photograph. They are writing an uprising which with its cry “Woman, Life, Liberty” is historic. A war of life against death which has persisted ever since and whose images by Iranians persist for freedom, against the regime. Book published on the occasion of the exhibition “You don't die” presented at Visa pour l'image, the international photojournalism festival in Perpignan, from September 2 to 17, 2023 Ghazal Golshiri, born in 1981 in Tehran, has been a journalist in the international department of the daily Le Monde since 2011. Marie Sumalla, born in 1980 in Perpignan, is a photo editor for the daily Le Monde since 2011.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
