Soaked in colour and deliberate in its staging, Nick Meek's aesthetic is a key to unlocking the collective psyche. Accessed through imagination and leading to a fiction of reality, this collective psyche is the space where meanings that might never have been there in the first place are created, opening to a profound questioning of the effects of memory in the way we perceive not only what surrounds us, but also ourselves.

The book gathers 39 hazy and hyperreal images of landscapes across the United States, with only a few exceptions in France and Japan. Printed in spreads that allow the reader to immerse themselves in the gaze of the photographer, the images become landscape in themselves. Far from being descriptive, they tear the surface of what we believe the places ought to be, delving into the space for re-imagining.

The tension that arises is the dialectic between past and present, proximity and distance, real and unreal: a constant sway, like a murmur, latent under the surface, inherently bittersweet. This volume is a device for thinking about those places we thought we knew.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
