These photographs were taken in the 1920s through the 1970s, throughout the world. They have one detail in common, which reminds us of the history of amateur photography: the shadow of the photographer. Jean-Marie Donat appropriated this incongruity, choosing only images in which the shadow appears wearing a hat. The effect of repetition created by imagining this series becomes its subject: the same man looms, always and everywhere.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
