An imposing building built for the American Army in the 1970s, President Hotel was for years the largest and most modern building in Saigon where it housed up to 2,500 people.

Witness to the history of Vietnam over the past fifty years, this decaying architectural carcass will soon be destroyed to make way for modern towers and shopping centers, turning a page in history. In this building, we play with layers of time. We navigate memories, we brush against dilapidated walls, the signs of a past life are still suspended. The scenes of life of the last inhabitants are already frozen, and in the corridors, the shadows play to revive the past.

The book is made up of 80 images and two texts, each revealing a facet of the life of the President Hotel, which was destroyed when this book was published.

– Winner of the VIPA Documentary Prize (Vienna International Photo Awards) in the professional category.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
