Soundtrack to the choreography Kreatur by Sasha Waltz, premiered June 2017 at Radialsystem V, Berlin

The soundtrack to Sasha Waltz's choreography Kreatur, premiered in June 2017 in Berlin and touring in Germany, Belgium, France and Spain the following year. Inhabiting the liminal spaces between different art forms is a central element in her work: in this piece, carried out with the fashion designer Iris van Herpen, the lighting designer Urs Schönebaum and Soundwalk Collective, the choreographer and her dancers investigate aspects of our existence set against the contemporary backdrop of a society divided by power and powerlessness, dominance and weakness, freedom and control, community and isolation.

The compositions are based on field recordings collected at a factory in Nera Montoro in Italy, at clubs in Moscow and Berlin, and at the former Stasi prison at Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. The result is an abstraction of the resonance of these twentieth-century buildings, with industrial machinery, factory acoustics, and echoes of their empty architectures.

“Each of these buildings is made of multiple layers of history, sleeping layers, each one with their own narrative. Through the act of recording and re-composing, we have re-awoken these narratives and memories that were left behind by their inhabitants, and held within the walls of these buildings.”

The record includes a booklet with a conversation between the group's Stephan Crasneanscki and the choreographer.

Soundwalk Collective is an international musci and art-collective based in New York City. Since 2000 they have been sonic nomads, embarking on never-ending journeys, from retracing the path of Ulysses in the Mediterranean Sea, to the Rub' al Khali desert of the Arabian Peninsula, to Eastern Europe's vanished history of Bessarabia. By exploring and documenting the world around us through its sounds, the Collective abstracts and re-composes narrative sound pieces through fragments of reality to form distinct audible journeys. The Collective's live performances are diverse and often site and venue specific. Founded by Stephan Crasneanscki, joined by Simone Merli and Kamran Sadeghi, Soundwalk was awarded an “Audie Award” for their performance alongside Afrika Bambaataa in the Bronx, as well as a “Dalton Pen Award” for the Sonic Memorial Soundwalk in collaboration with Paul Auster at Ground Zero, New York. Distinguished collaborators include Patti Smith, Mulatu Astatke, Nan Goldin and Jean-Luc Godard. The Collective have also written original scores for contemporary dance choreographer Sasha Waltz.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
