“The exhibition of works by Shomei Tomatsu and myself at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, repeatedly postponed for reasons related also to the pandemic, is finally opening.

When Tomatsu first approached me asking what I would think about the two of us doing an exhibition on the theme of Tokyo together, I was working in Okinawa. I had done quite a few shows, but that would be my first one with him, and I could not think of any reason to turn the offer down: I replied that it sounded good, and that it would be great if we could make it an impressive show — maybe in a shuffled style. However, we eventually had to scrap that plan due to the totally unexpected event of his passing about a year later.”
