Golden Persimmons II is the continuation of an ongoing documentary project spanning six years. The self titled book — the phrase is a rough Japanese to English translation of the artist's surname — is a visual catalogue of his life and neighbourhood shown in three parts. The brutalist black and white pictures depict lonely settings: vacant shop fronts, unfinished industrial scenes, empty rooms and isolated still lifes.

His laconic, no-frills approach translates his practice accurately into art book form. The reductive style is carefully constructed to feel like staged scenes devoid of human contact and interaction; the simplistic, graphic aesthetic lives somewhere between product work and documentary snapshot. The book contains pictures from the last three years that span multiple cities: New York, London, Copenhagen, Saugerties, and the artist's home town of Vacaville, California.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
