Preface by Arnaud Claass
Text by Thierry Girard

A revised and enlarged version of the first title Thierry Girard published in 1982, an early work in which he claimed the influence of his glorious elders — Lee Friedlander, Tony Ray-Jones and, first among them, Robert Frank — and which belongs to a decisive moment for the medium in France. Revisiting the Far-Westhoek archive as part of a retrospective survey of his whole output imposed a new and broader selection.

“In my opinion, Far-Westhoek represents both the prevalence of a complex artistic culture and the brilliant success of its overcoming. […] It is therefore this territory of the Westhoek, the western extremity of the region, that is the object of an assumption characterised by a mixture of anxiety and false banality, of laborious harshness and popular truculence, a context around which powerful natural forces prowl: the wind, the sea, the dunes.” — Arnaud Claass

The volume is also a tribute, in its allusions and its graphic quotations, to the cult first edition of Robert Frank's The Americans (Delpire, 1958).

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
